Boatbuilding Glossary


The vocabulary is the barrier to entry for the whole business. Here is most of it, in plain English, with the words that are genuinely used differently in different yards marked as such.

One

The shape of a hull

The words for the parts of a boat you can point at, from the keel up.

Keel

The backbone: the timber, or moulded composite member, running fore and aft along the very bottom of the hull, to which the rest of the structure is attached. On a sailing boat the word is also used loosely for the ballasted fin below the hull, which is a different thing doing a different job.

Stem

The upright member at the bow into which the forward ends of the planking land. On a plywood boat it is often a simple stem post with the plywood bevelled onto it; on a traditionally planked boat it is a curved timber cut with a rabbet to receive the plank ends.

Apron

A reinforcing timber fitted behind the stem, giving the plank ends more wood to fasten into than the stem alone would offer.

Sternpost

The upright member at the after end of the keel. On a transom-sterned boat it supports the transom; on a double-ender it does at the stern what the stem does at the bow.

Transom

The flat — or nearly flat — surface closing the stern. A "wineglass transom" is one whose lower part curves into the hull in the shape its name suggests, and is among the harder things a first-time builder can choose to make.

Garboard

The plank next to the keel — the first one fitted and, on most boats, the most awkward, because it twists hardest along its length.

Strake

One continuous line of planking running from bow to stern. A hull is described by how many strakes a side it has; a plank is one physical piece, and a strake may be made of several scarfed together.

Sheerstrake

The topmost strake, running along the sheer. Usually the one that gets varnished when everything else gets painted.

Sheer

The curve of the top edge of the hull seen from the side. A "sweet sheer" is the usual praise; a sheer that sags in the middle is the first thing a critical eye notices and very nearly impossible to fix later.

Chine

The corner where the bottom of the hull meets the side, on a hull built with flat or nearly flat panels. A round-bilged hull has no chine; a multi-chine hull has two or three, approximating a curve with facets.

Bilge

The curved part of the hull between the bottom and the topsides — and also, confusingly but universally, the lowest inside part of the hull where water collects.

Freeboard

The height of the hull above the waterline. More freeboard keeps water out and gives the wind more to push against.

Rocker

The fore-and-aft curve of the bottom of the hull. A boat with much rocker turns easily and tracks poorly; a straight-keeled one does the opposite.

Deadrise

The angle the bottom makes with the horizontal, measured from the keel outward. A flat-bottomed skiff has none; a deep-V powerboat has a great deal, which is what lets it take a chop at speed.

Flare

The outward slope of the topsides as they rise, which throws spray away from the boat and adds buoyancy as she heels.

Tumblehome

The opposite of flare: topsides that curve inward as they rise. Handsome, traditional on launches and canoes, and a little more work to plank.

Camber

The athwartships crown of a deck, which sheds water and makes the deck stiffer than a flat one of the same thickness.

Forefoot

Where the stem meets the keel — the part of the boat that enters the water first when she pitches.

Skeg

A fin projecting below the after part of the hull, fitted to help a boat hold a straight course and, on a small boat, to protect the rudder when she takes the ground.

Inside the boat

What holds the shape together once the planking is on.

Frame

A transverse member running up the inside of the hull, giving the planking its shape and its stiffness. Called a rib when it is light and steam-bent; a frame when it is sawn to shape.

Mould

A temporary former, cut to the shape of a station, that the hull is built over and which is removed afterwards. Distinct from a frame, which stays in the finished boat — a distinction worth getting right early, because plans use both words on the same drawing.

Station

One of the evenly spaced cross-sections a designer draws the hull at. The table of offsets gives the hull's shape as measurements at each station.

Strongback

The rigid beam or ladder frame the moulds are set up on, holding them square, level and in line while the hull is built around them. Its accuracy becomes the boat's accuracy.

Stringer

A light fore-and-aft member running inside the planking, stiffening it between the frames.

Hog

A timber laid on top of the keel, into which the garboards are fastened. Not every boat has one; those that do are easier to plank.

Floor

A transverse member across the top of the keel tying the frames on either side together. Nothing to do with the surface you stand on, which is the sole.

Bulkhead

A transverse partition, full or partial. In a stitch-and-glue boat the bulkheads often replace frames and moulds entirely, giving the hull its shape and its stiffness at once.

Knee

An angled bracket joining two members meeting at a corner — traditionally cut from a naturally curved crook of timber, now more often laminated or cut from plywood.

Breasthook

The knee in the bow tying the two gunwales and the stem together. A small piece doing a great deal of work.

Gunwale

The reinforcing member along the top edge of the hull. Pronounced "gunnel", and often made as a pair — an inwale inside and a rubbing strake outside.

Thwart

A transverse seat. In a small open boat it is a structural member as much as a place to sit: it holds the sides apart.

Coaming

A raised lip around a cockpit or hatch, there to stop water running in over the edge.

Carlin

A fore-and-aft member at the edge of a deck opening, into which the ends of the shortened deck beams land.

Sole

The floor you walk on inside a boat — as distinct from the floors, which are structure. The language is not helping anybody here, but it is the language.

Cutting, joining and shaping

The operations a build log is describing when it says a week went somewhere.

Lofting

Drawing the hull out full size — traditionally in chalk on a loft floor — to turn the designer's table of offsets into shapes that can be cut. Many modern plans for amateurs supply full-size patterns precisely so that this step can be skipped, and say so prominently.

Table of offsets

The table of measurements defining the hull's shape at each station, in feet, inches and eighths. The compact form in which a hull was transmitted for about two centuries.

Fairing

Making a line or a surface sweet — free of flats, bumps and hard spots — by eye, by batten and by sanding. It is the single activity most often underestimated by first-time builders, and the one that most decides whether the finished boat looks right.

Spiling

Transferring the true shape a plank needs to be onto the stock, using a batten and dividers, rather than assuming it is a straight or regular curve. A plank cut without spiling almost never fits.

Scarf

A long tapered joint used to make one long piece out of two shorter ones. In plywood a slope of about eight to one is the usual rule, and a well-made scarf in epoxy is stronger than the wood around it. Also spelled scarph.

Rabbet

A groove cut along the keel, stem or sternpost to receive the edge of the planking. Cutting one correctly, so that the plank lands fair along its whole length, is a traditional test of patience.

Steam bending

Softening timber with wet heat — an hour a inch of thickness is the usual rule of thumb — so it can be bent to shape and will hold that shape as it cools and dries. Oak and ash are the traditional choices.

Laminating

Building a curved member up from several thin strips glued together over a form. Stronger and more stable than steam bending, and it does not need a steam box — but it needs clamps, and a great many of them.

Bevel

The angle cut on the edge of a frame, plank or panel so that the next piece lands flat against it. Bevels change continuously along a curved hull, which is why they are cut and checked rather than measured once.

Fastening

The general word for what holds the boat together mechanically — screws, nails, rivets, bolts. In salt water the metal matters as much as the size: silicon bronze and stainless behave very differently, and mixing metals invites corrosion.

Rivet

In clinker work, a copper nail driven through both planks and a washer — a rove — then cut short and peened over to draw the joint tight. The characteristic sound of a clinker boatyard.

Bung

A wooden plug glued into a counterbored screw hole and pared flush, so that a varnished surface shows wood rather than metal. Cut from the same stock, with the grain running the same way, or it will announce itself.

Caulking

Driving cotton or oakum into the seams between carvel planks so that they take up and become watertight. A traditional operation with its own tools, and not to be confused with running a bead of modern sealant, which is a different thing that happens to share the word.

Materials and coatings

What the boat is made of, and what goes on top.

Marine plywood

Plywood made with waterproof glue and, crucially, without internal voids — so that a panel can be bent, bevelled and left in a damp bilge without delaminating. BS 1088 is the specification most often quoted. Exterior-grade plywood uses the same glue but permits voids, which is the difference that matters.

Okoume

A light West African hardwood, the usual core of good marine plywood for small craft: light, easy to bend and to sand, not naturally durable, and therefore always used sealed. Meranti is heavier, harder and more resistant to knocks.

Epoxy

A two-part adhesive and coating that bonds well to wood, fills gaps, and is the material that made modern amateur boatbuilding practical. It is not UV-stable and must be painted or varnished over. It also sensitises some people with repeated skin contact, which is why gloves are not optional.

Polyester resin

The resin most production fibreglass boats are built with. Cheaper than epoxy and entirely reasonable in a mould; a poor choice for bonding to wood, where its adhesion is markedly worse.

Thickened epoxy

Epoxy with a filler stirred in to stop it running and to give it body. Colloidal silica makes it strong and hard to sand; microballoons make it light and easy to sand and are for fairing, not for structure. Which filler is which is a distinction worth learning before mixing.

Fillet

A concave bead of thickened epoxy run into an inside corner, spreading the load from one panel into the next and giving the glass tape a radius to lie down over instead of a sharp corner it would bridge.

Glass cloth

Woven glass fibre laid into resin to add strength and abrasion resistance. Light plain-weave cloth over plywood is mostly there to protect the surface; heavier biaxial and tape do structural work.

Sheathing

Covering a hull in glass cloth and resin. It adds abrasion resistance and a moisture barrier; it does not turn a wooden boat into a fibreglass one, and sheathing over wood that is already wet traps the problem inside.

Wetting out

Working resin into dry cloth until it turns from white to clear. Under-wetted cloth is weak; over-wetted cloth is heavy and no stronger.

Peel ply

A fabric laid over a fresh lay-up and stripped off once cured, leaving a clean, lightly textured surface that needs no sanding before the next coat. It saves more work than almost anything else in the shop.

Amine blush

The waxy film some epoxies leave as they cure. Harmless, water-soluble, and the reason a coat of varnish or paint sometimes refuses to stick: wash it off with water and a scrubbing pad before sanding, or the sandpaper simply spreads it around.

Antifouling

Paint for the underwater surfaces of a boat kept afloat, intended to discourage weed and barnacles. A boat kept on a trailer and dried between outings does not need it.

Five

Rig and gear

The vocabulary of what goes above the sheer, for the boats that sail.

Sprit rig

A four-sided sail set on a mast with a diagonal spar — the sprit — running from low on the mast to the peak of the sail. Simple, cheap, quiet and very old; the rig of the Thames barge and of a great many small home-built dinghies.

Lug rig

A four-sided sail hung from a yard that crosses the mast. Balanced, standing and dipping lugs differ in where the yard sits and what happens when you tack. Cheap to make, forgiving to sail, and easily struck and stowed in a small open boat.

Gaff rig

A four-sided fore-and-aft sail with a spar — the gaff — along its top edge. More sail area low down than a bermudan rig of the same mast height, at the cost of more strings.

Gunter rig

A rig whose yard stands nearly vertical, giving something close to a triangular sail while keeping the spars short enough to stow inside the boat. The usual answer for a trailerable dinghy that wants a tall sail.

Bermudan rig

The familiar triangular mainsail set on a tall mast. Also called marconi. Efficient to windward and demanding of the mast.

Centreboard

A pivoting plate lowered through a slot in the hull to resist leeway, and raised for shallow water and for the trailer. A daggerboard does the same job but drops straight down instead of pivoting.

Leeboard

A board hung on the outside of the hull doing a centreboard's job, leaving the inside of the boat clear. Traditional in Dutch craft and on flat-bottomed working boats.

Reef

To reduce sail area in a rising wind by tying part of the sail down. The interesting question about any small boat rig is how easily it can be reefed while afloat and alone.

Six

Measurements and numbers

The figures on a specification, and what they actually tell you.

LOA

Length overall: the length of the hull from the foremost to the aftermost point, not counting spars, bowsprits or outboard brackets. The number a marina charges by.

LWL

Load waterline length: how much of her is in the water when she is floating at her designed weight. It governs the speed of a displacement hull far more than LOA does.

Beam

Maximum width. On a trailerable boat it is the number to check against the law before anything else.

Draft

How deep she floats — the distance from the waterline to the lowest point. For a centreboard boat, quoted both board up and board down.

Displacement

What she weighs, which is exactly the weight of water she pushes aside. Designed displacement assumes a stated load; a boat built heavy floats deeper and sails differently from the one on the drawing.

Sail area

The total area of the working sails. Compared against displacement it gives a rough sense of whether a boat will move in light airs or want reefing early.

Hull speed

The rough limit on a displacement hull's speed, about 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length in feet, in knots. A useful approximation rather than a law: light, slender hulls exceed it and heavy ones never reach it.
